In 2007, Africa Surf International (ASI) was founded with the vision of developing African surfers across the Diaspora and the mission of connecting amateur and professional surfers from African countries with the Diaspora surf community. ASI hopes to create a nurturing environment where respectful dialogue and unity through sports can flourish through an annual surfing competition on the shores of Africa.
ASI aims to encourage and support youth development through surfing by providing training, education, and opportunities for surfers seeking to compete in the professional circuit.
ASI is operated by a diverse team of individuals dedicated to and passionate about the development of surfing around the globe.
Our team is made up of experienced surfers from across the continent and the diaspora, each dedicated to supporting one another and helping emerging surf communities grow. Surfers from more established programs actively collaborate with those in developing regions—sharing knowledge, resources, and mentorship to build a stronger, united surf culture. Backed by industry experts, we’re committed to delivering not only the best gear and service, but also the spirit of solidarity that drives everything we do. We’re always here to guide you, answer your questions, and help you find the perfect gear for your surf journey.
We offer a wide range of surfboards, wetsuits, and accessories from top brands in the industry. Our products are carefully selected to meet the needs of surfers of all levels, from beginners to pros.
Africa Surf International (ASI) began as a modest initiative—a surf camp for amputees on Sierra Leone’s Bureh Beach in 2014. What started as a grassroots effort to bring healing and joy through surfing has since evolved into a dynamic platform that nurtures local talent and elevates African surfers to the global stage, including Olympic-level competition.
Bureh Beach, now recognized as Sierra Leone’s surf capital, is home to the country’s first surf club, established in 2012. The club has been instrumental in transforming the local community, with approximately 90% of the youth now engaged in surfing activities. This vibrant surf culture has fostered athletic development and spurred economic growth through tourism and related enterprises.
Building on this foundation, ASI is developing a dedicated surf academy at Bureh Beach to provide structured training and resources for aspiring surfers across West Africa.
This academy represents a significant step in ASI’s mission to empower communities through surfing, blending athletic excellence with cultural exchange and community development.
Through initiatives like Black Girls Surf and Inkwell Surf, ASI continues to champion inclusivity and representation in the surfing world, ensuring that the sport serves as a conduit for positive change and empowerment across the African continent and its diaspora.
