Our Surf Series is a dynamic cultural exchange that brings together athletes, artists, and ocean advocates through a powerful blend of surf contests, community events, and cross-cultural connection. Rooted in unity and education, each stop on the series features high-energy competitions alongside cultural programming, including workshops, panels, and water sports conferences. From storytelling circles to traditional dance, from surf therapy to ocean conservation, the series creates space for meaningful dialogue and shared learning—celebrating heritage while building the future of global surf culture.
Founded in 2004, Inkwell Surf & Sk8 Club has led the charge in diversity. After ten years of promoting men/boys of the diaspora, Coach Rho decided that focusing on the progression of women in the sport was necessary.
Black Girls Surf & Inkwell Surf has been building waves of change through powerful community events for over twenty years. From Black People Surf Day and Black Girl Beach Day to International Surfing Day, Earth Day, and our long-standing Giving Back to the Community Day, we create space for joy, unity, and purpose at the shoreline. These gatherings celebrate culture, protect our planet, and uplift our people—one wave, one beach, one day at a time.
From international paddle outs for George Floyd to leading the Jena 6 protest in Hollywood, Black Girls Surf stands at the intersection of sport and social justice. We honored history at Inkwell Beach with a commemorative plaque in Santa Monica and continue to work with governments around the world to recognize surfing as both a cultural force and a competitive sport. This is more than surfing — it’s solidarity in motion.
Rosaura Alvarez is a seasoned professional champion surfer from Venezuela, making waves on the international stage. Known for her fearless style and powerful connection to the ocean, she represents the strength and spirit of Latin American surf culture. As a standout athlete with over 20 years of experience with contests and the Technical Director with Black Girls Surf, Rosaura is inspiring young girls across the globe to rise, ride, and rewrite the surf narrative.
Khadjou Sambe is Senegal’s first female professional surfer and a proud ambassador of Black Girls Surf. Hailing from the vibrant fishing village of N’Gor Island, she’s breaking barriers in and out of the water—empowering the next generation of African girls to ride waves and chase dreams. As a trailblazer on the international surf scene, Khadjou is not just making history—she’s making a movement.
Rachel Ola, BGS Camp Director, has taken charge in her country of Nigeria to teach young girls and women to surf in her country of Nigeria. Rachel was recently featured in a BET moment teaching the host how to surf. Rachel has produced competition ready girls over the last few years.
Rhonda Harper, affectionately known as Coach Rho, has led the charge for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the surf community. A 40+ year surfer, advocate, and fitness trainer, Coach Rho's passion for fashion and surfing made setting the course for Inkwell Surf and BGS easy. Named one of Sports Illustrated's 100 Influential Black Women in Sports, Coach Rho has been featured in multiple ads, interviews, documentaries, and articles.

Knowledge is power, and access to it should have no unlimited—that’s why we’ve created our e-learning surf education course. This digital platform brings surf theory, ocean safety, and environmental stewardship to youth across Africa, no matter where they live.

Our youth scholarship programs are designed to empower girls aged 7–17 through access to sports, education, and personal development. By removing financial barriers, we provide young girls across Africa with the tools, training, and support they need to thrive in and out of the water—nurturing future leaders, athletes, and changemakers.
